Giraffes like to eat Acacia leaves, and can eat up to 75 pounds. They drink up to 10 gallons of waters when they eat Acacia leaves. Their hearts are 2 feet and weigh about 25 pounds. They have a black tongue that doesn’t get sunburn. It is 18 inch longs. Acacia trees have long thorns on the tree so other animals won’t try to eat the leaves. It doesn’t affect giraffes. That is why they have a long tongue. Did you know that giraffe can moo, hiss, roar and whistle to communicate with other animals? The tails of giraffes are 8 feet long. For a long time people called giraffes a “camelopardalis”.
They learn how to hammer other giraffes with their horns. When the giraffes bend down to drink water it is easier for a predator to attack the giraffes. When giraffes go up to the water to drink the other giraffes watch for a predator. Females give birth to a calf about 15 months after they mate with a male. Females use their hooves to defend their little ones. The mother stands up when they’re giving birth. The calf is like two meteors tall.
